HSBA Primary Schools Team Tournament Results
[posted 26/05/08]

There were 19 boys teams and 14 girls teams (100 children) taking part in the tournament. It was good to see some new school teams such as Knebworth, Lordship Farm (Letchworth), Lodge Farm (Stevenage), Northwood prep, the return after an absence of St Giles (South Mimms) and Sherrardswood (Welwyn Garden City), plus old stalwarts who always support us so well Wilbury and Norton St Nicholas (Letchworth), Little Heath and Lochinver (Potters Bar).

The tournament, preceded by a very successful coaching session, was played in a round robin format, with placings for boys girls and combined teams. It was played in excellent spirit and great sportsmanship.

In the boys section, Lochinver, St Giles, Norton St Nicholas 2 and Northwood Prep all won their boxes to proceed to playing off for positions one to four, however within the boxes there were some very tight games with invitation team, Letchworth Badminton club, giving Norton St Nicholas 2 a very close run and Wilbury 1 and Norton St Nicholas 4 coming in at very close second positions.

In the girls section, first round, Little Heath, S Giles and Norton St Nicholas 3 went through to play off for positions 1-3. But again there were some very close games as well, with Lordship Farm just missing out by a few points, as did Sherrardswood.

In the Boys second round, some extremely close matches were seen, with just one point difference between the top two positions. Lochinver became the 2007/2008 Primary schools team champions, with Northwood Prep the very close runners up and St Giles third.

In the girls section, a very close tussle between St Giles and Little Heath saw St Giles take the crown by just 3 points and Norton St Nicholas coming third.

For the combined teams section, boys and girls teams points (from the same school) are added together to give a total of points for the whole competition (although no more matches are played). The final positions were St Giles (1st), Norton St Nicholas 3 (2nd) and Little Heath (3rd).

Boys Winners

  1. Lochinver - Suraj Shah, Archie Preston, Henry Wood
  2. Northwood Prep - Rishav Shah, Alastair Parker, Julian Mann

[posted 19/04/08]

Herts U17 squad, took 4th place at the U17 Shires League final on Sunday 13th April. A victory over Lancs put them in contention for 1st to 4th position, but Hants proved to strong, and the play-off for 3rd/4th position against Avon ended in a draw, which Avon won on points. Amy George Takes home 5 Golds and 1 Silver in the last 3 U11 BE Tournaments
[posted 18/04/08]

Amy George

An Under 11 National tournament took place at Bracknell, Berks on Sunday 10th February 2008.

Amy, after a difficult draw, won her box, which included one of the Nationally ranked top U11 seed players, which continued her through to a semi final against a Dorset player that she comfortably won to two games 11-5, 11-5.

She continued her winning streak when she met her Herts doubles partner Isabel Hatt beating her 11-8, and 11-5.

Amy then paired up with Isabel for the doubles to again comfortably achieve the Gold medal against the Dorset pairing.

A few weeks later was the U11 BE Middlesex where Amy again took Gold for the Singles again. She met Herts Isabel Hatt in the semi final beating her 11-8, 11-4. and then continued to win against the Dorset player 11-4, 11-8. At the same tournament both Amy and Izzy paired up again to comfortably win the doubles title.

The last U11 BE tournament was held in Sussex on 5th April where again Amy and Isabel again comfortably won the doubles title. This time round Amy felt she was having a bad day at singles and although reached the final lost to the Dorset player taking home Silver.

Amy is now looking forward to the U11 Championships on 3rd May where she will (as always) partner Isabel in the doubles.

Shires League Clean Sweep
[posted 25/02/08]

Triple success for Herts as all three age-groups qualify for Shires League Finals. Herts' U15s and U13s finished off their season, on Sunday 24th February, with a trip to Suffolk, each needing a win to ensure qualification for the finals. The U15s were not at full strength but managed a reasonable 13-7 win. The U13s cut it fine, though. The boys were below par following Sheffield the day before, but the girls held it together winning all their Singles and all their Doubles, to set up an 11-9 victory. The U13s remain undefeated and win the Group. This means that both teams join the U17s in looking forward to the finals. Not many counties will manage that feat.

8-Nations Bronze for Emily
[posted 24/02/08]

England medals were hard to come by at the 8-Nations in Kerenzberg, Switzerland, which finished today. Emily Westwood seeded 5th in the Individual Singles, made the semi-finals where she met No.1 seed Mette Poulsen of Denmark. After the losing the first set 18-21, Emily had to concede due to a worsening hamstring injury, and to pull out of the Doubles. But she had the consolation of going beyond her seeding and picking up that Bronze medal.

U15s High five at Team Challenge
[posted 16/02/08]

Herts' U15s achieved a well deserved 5th place at the Team Challenge, held at Luton Regional Sports Centre on Saturday 16th February. After four wins in the first round, including 5-2 v Notts, a top four place beckoned. But a 3-4 defeat to Surrey (including two games lost 19-21) in the last group game, whilst Notts managed a 7-0 win over Cheshire (6-1 and Herts would have gone through) edged Herts down to earth and into the 5 to 8 play-off's. But in that second round, wins over Essex and Yorkshire (yes, Yorkshire!) saw Herts take that fifth place. The fact that Notts went on to take second place overall, shows Herts perhaps were a shade unlucky, but if offered 5th place at the start of the day the team would have jumped at it, so they can be well pleased with their day's work.

U17s Make it Seven out of Seven
[posted 13/02/08]

A 15-5 win over Lincolnshire on Sunday 10th February saw the U17 Squad complete their season's Shires League Group A programme unbeaten. The squad, lacking their three highest rated boys and highest ranked girl, made the long trek to Market Rasen and emerged with an emphatic win. This was a terrific squad performance, and the win duly confirmed their qualification for the Finals on 12th April.
